Mount Washington Valley Children’s Museum to Host Second Annual Early Childhood Conference

NORTH CONWAY, NH -  The MWV Children’s Museum will host the second annual “Come Play With Me!” Early Childhood Conference, Saturday, September 25, 2010 at Kennett Senior High School, in North Conway, NH. The conference features a number of sessions covering many aspects of early childhood education, and will draw dozens educators and interested individuals from across the region.

The importance of play in the lives of young children is a key focus for the five-year old Mount Washington Valley Children’s Museum. “This conference is a perfect fit for us,” says Shelly Morin, the museum’s Executive Director. “Early childhood educators live the importance of play daily and it is important for us to share that passion with them and parents of young children.”

This year’s conference came to be through conversations between Ida Streeter, Director of Madison Preschool and Kate Stanley, Lead Toddler Teacher and Co-Director of Cornerstone Kids.

“We all felt strongly that the Mount Washington Valley needed an annual conference for early childhood educators that was affordable and close to home,” says Streeter.  “Under new child care licensing regulations, early childhood educators are required to obtain gradually more workshop training hours over the next two years. This conference offers educators an opportunity to gain six hours of workshop training in one day.”

The keynote address for the “Come Play With Me!” conference is entitled “Genuine Happiness,” presented by featured speaker Scott Noyes from Empowering Programs.  Noyes has been professionally working, playing, and talking about children for over twenty years. He teaches graduate and undergraduate level courses and his first book, Positive Discipline - That Works! is in its fourth publishing. His second book, Intentional Language was released in 2003.

Noyes possesses a deep background in early childhood-related issues. He has been a primary care provider for abused and neglected children, a lead teacher in a parent cooperative, a nonprofit childcare center director and a childcare training specialist. Noyes is also a state sponsored child sexual assault prevention trainer, a certified instructor for Vermont Northern Lights Career Development Center and credentialed trainer and mentor in New Hampshire

Many Mount Washington Valley programs and individuals are sponsoring workshops at the “Come Play With Me!” Conference. Mountain View Montessori, World of Wonder, early childhood mentor and consultant Kathy Sosny, and White Mountain Waldorf School are sponsoring workshops with topics ranging from hands-on math and science to creating preschool portfolios to document children’s learning.

Conference co-coordinator Kate Stanley hopes to draw educators and non-educators alike. “The conference is not only a great way to gain training hours for early childhood educators,” says Stanley. “This year’s keynote address speaks to everyone, including parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and anyone involved in the lives of children.”

Mount Washington Valley Children’s Museum  presents the “Jammy Jam” at Flatbreads

North Conway, NH-The Mount Washington Valley Children’s Museum is proud to present the first ever Jammy Jam at their Flatbread Fundraiser on Tuesday, December 15th.  Featuring family entertainer Mr. Phil & Co. and musician Becky Close, the Jammy Jam will add music and play to the pizza and festivities at Flatbread Company. Flatbread donates a portion of each pizza sold to the Museum. Flatbread Pizza is located at the Eastern Slope Inn in North Conway, NH on Route 16.

With play being such a vital part of a child’s development, the MWV Children’s Museum strives to provide play opportunities for all children that come to visit at their location at 2936 White Mountain Highway, in the Stan and Dan’s Plaza.  The MWV Children’s Museum also brings the art of play out into the community.

Starting at 11:30am, Flatbread Company will start firing their famous pizzas and a portion of each pizza sold will benefit the MWV Children’s Museum.  In addition to Flatbread’s generosity, several entertainers will be performing for the first ever “Jammy Jam.”

The idea behind the “Jammy Jam” is for families to come out to Flatbreads in their jammies, enjoy some Flatbread pizza and dance and play with live entertainment from 4pm-7pm.

Becky Close, a local acoustic performer will open this fun filled evening, entertaining children with sing-alongs starting at 4pm.  Becky has performed at local preschools teaching children about song and movement.

Mr. Phil & Co., a NH based entertainer, will be performing from 5pm-7pm.  Mr. Phil will be singing, dancing, and playing his ukulele. Mr. Phil is also a balloonologist creating the most amazing balloon art that kids just love.

“We are so happy to have Mr. Phil donating his time to support the museum as his business is the art of play as well,” stated Museum Executive Director Shelly Morin.

C-More the Penguin from Cranmore Mountain will also be on hand.  C-More will be bringing along his fleet of penguins that are ready to rock and roll down the slopes of Cranmore on January 10 . The penguins are part of the Great Penguin Race at the resort, an annual fundraiser for the Museum.  You can take home one of C-More’s penguin friends with a $5 donation, which also entitles you to one Free Admission to the MWV Children’s Museum.

Lastly, if the thought of being comfy cozy in jammies, enjoying fabulous food and dancing the night away with the  kids isn’t enough, the MWV Children’s Museum will also have a silent auction taking place with items donated by several local businesses.

Businesses supporting the museum with a donation include Cranmore Mountain, Cranmore Family Fitness, Textile Artist-Sarah Waldron, LCR Nursery, Jewelry by Timothy Psaledakis & Friends, Stone Mountain Art Center, Great Glen Trails, Steve’s Beans, Stonehurst Manor, Suzanne Silvermoon, LPN, The Local Bookie, and McSherry’s Nursery. New “Camera Obscura” exhibit at the MWV Children’s Museum

One of the great things about light is that it bends! And when it bends it causes interesting visual effects, like turning things upside down. The new camera obscura exhibit at the Children’s Museum creatively demonstrates this phenomenon. Designed to look like a Victorian era camera, black box and drape on a post, the camera obscura can be turned to look at different things and its focus can be adjusted for close up or far away viewing. Elementary aged kids like to experiment with the upside down visual effect, while preschool aged children enjoy the cause and effect of the push button light switch.

This unique, science/history object can only be found at the MWV Children’s Museum. It was designed, built and generously donated exclusively for the museum by Marc Stowbridge, member of the NH Astronomical Society. Mr. Stowbridge has many years experience working with telescopes and various kinds of lenses.

The MWV Children’s Museum is located at 2396 Rt. 16, a half mile north of N. Conway Village, and can be reached at 356-2992. Hours of operation are Wed. 10:00 – 1:00, Thurs. and Fri. 10:30 – 4:45, Sat. 10:30 – 5:00 and Sun. 10:00 – 1:00. Additional hours are often added so check the website at www.mwvchildrensmuseum.org for updated information.
